Swim Strong Foundation provides water safety and lear-to-swim programs to children and families in the New York City area, including those who are unable to afford payment due to cultural or economic barriers.
Students learn about water safety as it relates to different environments (pool, beach, rivers, lakes, etc.). They learn to move with confidence in the water; learn floating and streamlining skills on stomach and back, learn proper breathing and swimming skills. Students who are able to swim 50 yards (via a demonstrated swim test) are deemed to have passed the basic skill level.
On a practical basis, Swim Strong understands that not everyone will learn how to swim; however, everyone can learn about the dangers that water represents inside our own homes to everywhere in the outdoors, throughout the year and during extreme weather. If we understand the nature of water and how it manifests in different environments, we can make the proper decisions which will lead us to be safe in, on and around it. To that end, Swim Strong has developed a unique multi-media water safety education program,“Know Before You Go®”, that educates non-swimmers and swimmers alike, about water in our daily lives, both in our homes and out of doors by understanding different bodies of water (pools, lakes, ponds, rivers, and oceans), and the seasonal dangers of extreme weather such as flash flooding, hurricanes and storms. This comprehensive digital environmental education program can be taught in person or remotely, and is geared towards K-12 classrooms. It has been delivered to 34 schools thus far, in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island. The program has three modules for audiences of various age groups and is divided into Pre-K-Grade 2, Grades 3-7, and Grades 8-12. Partner schools can opt in to either a general overview program or a comprehensive curriculum complete with synchronous and asynchronous activities, including STEM based activities, and a teacher resource guide.
